Breaking the Echo Chamber
A common criticism of personalization is the creation of filter bubbles. Our research demonstrates that when optimization objectives explicitly value discovery and long-tail exploration, readers encounter a wider variety of topics and viewpoints.
By modifying the recommendation utility function to penalize extreme redundancy and reward diversity (based on semantic category differences), we show that it is possible to achieve both high CTR and high topic coverage.
